Happy Sunday to all of those who are not at work right now. I'm green with envy. But, I think that a little nap after work should square us up, so no harm no foul.

So, I'm reading this book right now by Po Bronson called "What Should I Do With My Life."
I think I can speak for a good majority of my friends when I say that I think this conundrum is extremely appropriate for the stage in life that we are embarking upon.
In the introduction he explains that the book is broken up into 8 sections, each addressing a different psychological question that poses as a barrier for people who are trying to discern their true purpose in life.
This stuff is good.

His goal is to tell other people's stories about how they have tackled these 8 mind-boggling detours, in order to help the rest of us out there in our personal pursuit of happiness.

I've just finished the first part, entitled "That Sense of 'Rightness.'" I was glad that this section was first, because I think that this is probably the question I struggle with the most out of all eight. Needless to say, I was intrigued. Here are some of my favorite quotes from this section:

"I agree: Who you are is more important than what you do. The goal is to bring what you do in alignment with who you are, so you don't end up being someone you don't want to be."

"Following school, he was offered a job as a litigator for the Department of Health and Human Services. It seemed like a pretty good first step. On paper, at least. One could make a logical argument that he was "well positioned," that he was "on track." But in his hear, he knew. Ugh."

"Among the many obstacles that might discourage a young man from choosing that direction [pursuing creative hobbies], the biggest one was this: Wasn't it self-serving simply to indulge what you enjoy? Who does it help? How does it make any contribution? How could you justify it, on a moral/philosophical terms?"

"...There's a difference between something that stimulates you for a year and something you can be passionate about for ten years. What is the difference? One thing is not ten times more stimulating than the other. The difference is whether your heart's in it. You don't find your purpose above the neck."

That last one is a kicker, huh? It practically jumped out of the book at me. The difference is whether your heart's in it, Amanda is what it might as well have read. Ok, duly noted.

I am definitely enjoying his insights. I will bring more fun quotes once I finish the next section. Stay tuned for issues regarding breaking out of social class norms. Juicy.

Have a wonderful Sunday everyone!

Yours, truly
